Having a home gym is one of the best ways to keep your work outs consistent. Factors that might stop you from exercising such as traffic, bad weather and crowded gyms would no longer be a factor.
Designing your own gym ensures that your workout space is custom designed for you as an individual. Everything you like to do, all of the equipment you need is in the accessible comfort of your own home. You can do a big workout a few times a week, or a little bit here and there whenever you have a moment to spare.
Factors to consider:
Space
If you have limited space, this should not stop you from working out at home. There are folding treadmills, resistance tubes that can be stored in a cupboard and a having few dumbbells don’t take up much room at all.
It’s also a great idea to check out door gyms. A door gym is like having your own cable station. You can perform multiple exercises for all muscle groups and you only need a few feet of space.
If you have space to spare, consider a multi-gym. Multi-gyms are a compact workout station and each station (usually 3) is designed for multiple adjustments and exercises.
You can have an amazing home gym with less than 200 square feet of space.

Make sure you have about 2-3 feet of space in between equipment, so you don’t hurt yourself in case of a fall.
Affordability
You get what you pay for! Equipment lasts longer and looks nicer when it’s high quality. Obviously better quality equipment, is more expensive. The quality of your equipment is important but having a budget isn’t the end of the world. A well made manual indoor bike is about $100. Resistance tubes are $10, stability balls range from $10-$60 and dumbbells go for $1 per 1/2 lb. You can skip on extras like mats, the bosu and a weight bench until you can save to expand your gym.
Service
When you are a member of a gym and something breaks down, it’s not your problem to get it fixed. When you have a home gym you need to make sure that the equipment you purchase has service plans and maintenance inspections to guarantee your equipment will last a long time. Learn how to properly clean and take care of your equipment so you can keep everything in order, in between professional maintenance tune ups.
Family
When you live with other people it’s a good idea to consider them as well. Will they be using it too? You may have to tweak your plans to buy a manual treadmill with a 200lb weight limit if your partner wants to work out, but weighs more. Do you have young children? A rack of dumbbells might be unsafe if young kids get in to the gym unsupervised. Is it a shared space? You might feel uncomfortable working out in the living room while roommates are watching TV or have guests.
Be Honest With Yourself
In the long run, a home gym is a great investment and will save you time and money. However, before going all out and spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on equipment ask yourself if you are truly serious about reaching your goals. Are you going to use the gym? Do you think you will stop using it after a few months? Do you have the self-motivation required to exercise on your own? Will you be willing to hire a personal trainer in addition to the home set up? Don’t turn your brand new equipment in to a coat rack. If you are going to set up a home gym, use it!
A home gym guarantees that you will always have a place to work out regardless of other factors. As long as you design it correctly and of course use it, the home gym is an excellent alternative to busy gyms or not working out at all. Just make sure you plan in advance to make certain that everything is right and ready to go.
